Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch

In early 19th century Germany, many communities found themselves in conflict between traditional Judaism and the new Reform movement. Finding the balance between living a Torah life and a German life thus became the great challenge of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch’s life.

Born in , in Hamburg, Germany, Rabbi Hirsch attended public school and received a full Jewish education at home. When he completed his studies, Hirsch decided to train for the rabbinate under Rabbi Jacob Ettlinger. After six years with Rabbi Ettlinger, he began studying languages, history and philosophy at the University of Bonn.

Rabbi Hirsch served as rabbi in several communities. His greatest impact was made when he served as the rabbi of Frankfurt-on-Main (from until his death in ). The Frankfurt community had been ravaged by the bitter division between traditional Jews and the new Reform movement. Rabbi Hirsch quickly created Jewish schools, ritual baths and kosher slaughter houses, while at the same time meeting modernity’s challenge by wearing clerical robes, delivering sermons in German and encouraging Bible study alongside Talmud.

German rabbi; born at Hamburg June 20, ; died at Frankfort-on-the-Main Dec. 31, His father, though a merchant, devoted much of his time to Hebrew studies; his grandfather, Mendel Frankfurter, was the founder of the Talmud Torah in Hamburg and unsalaried assistant rabbi of the neighboring congregation of Altona; and his granduncle, Löb Frankfurter, was the author of several Hebrew works. Hirsch was a pupil of Ḥakam Bernays, and the Biblical and Talmudical education which he received, combined with his teacher's influence, led him to determine not to become a merchant, as his parents had desired, but to choose the rabbinical vocation. In furtherance of this plan he studied Talmud from to in Mannheim under Jacob Ettlinger. He then entered the University of Bonn, where he studied at the same time as his future antagonist, Abraham Geiger.

In Hirsch was elected chief rabbi ("Landrabbiner") of the principality of Oldenburg, where he remained until , when he was elected chief rabbi of the Hanoverian districts of Aurich and Osnabrück, with his residence in Emden. During this period he wrote his "Neunzehn Briefe über Judenthum," which were published, under the pseudonym of "Ben Usiel
