Jacob Zeilin was the first United States Marine Corps non-brevet general.

Education
Nothing is known of Zeilins youth previous to his admission to the United States Military Academy at West Point as a cadet on July 1, He remained here several years, but was not graduated.
Career
On October 1, , Zeilin entered the marine corps as a second lieutenant. After a preliminary training at the marine barracks in Philadelphia and Charlestown, Massachussets, he joined the sloop Erie, stationed on the coast of Brazil, He was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant, from September 12, From to he was again at the marine barracks in Charlestown. From to he was with the frigate Columbia, at first on the coast of Brazil and later in the Mediterranean. During the Mexican War he was attached to the frigate Congress of the Pacific Squadron and participated in several landing expeditions in California and Mexico. His first station was shore duty in the Philadelphia and Virginia yards before being assigned to the USS Erie in In he returned to shore duty, this time at yards in Massachusettes and New York, before being posted to another boat aboard the USS Columbus in
Brigadier General Zeilin patrolled to Brazil and along the coast of South America before moving to the USS Congress in to support the Mexican-American war.
He participated in the Conquest of California, the action at San Gabriel River, the Capture of Los Angeles, and the Battle of La Mesa. He was briefly assigned the Commandant of San Diego before he returned to Mexico for the capture of the Guaymas and Mazatlan.
Brigadier General Zeilin would then be assigned to the Perry Expedition and landed with Commodore Matthew Perry during his mission to Japan.
