The man is gone but the dream lives on
Maalim Seif Hamad’s dream was to see his beloved islands of Zanzibar turned into the Dubai of Africa, an offshore haven for the bustling economies of East Africa.
He embodied the split nature of Tanzania, a country created in haste in as a merger between the vast nation of Tanganyika and the tiny islands of Zanzibar.
He was prominent in Tanzanian politics, a friend and colleague of the country’s legendary founder Julius Nyerere, while being a Zanzibari nationalist.
Mostly he was a democrat and a man of high principle, a feature that in the rough world of Tanzanian politics required mountains of patience.
Born on the island of Pemba, then part of the British protectorate of Zanzibar, he became a teacher which is why he was always referred to as Maalim.
He was a member of the Zanzibar Revolutionary Council after independence and rose to be a member of the central committee and head of economic planning for Tanzania’s ruling party, the CCM, between and before becoming Chief Minister of Zanzibar.
He was expelled from the ruling party after agitating for multiparty demo
Remembering Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad
Anniversaries give us opportunities to make sense of history. They help us to reflect on the past, debate the present and ponder the future. When historic figures die, we are left to debate their legacies. Oftentimes, their legacies are contested. The contested legacies of great leaders help to punctuate national narratives of the past.
Seif Sharif Hamad, fondly known as Maalim, which in Swahili means a teacher, was one such national figure whose legacy remains at the heart of contemporary contested Zanzibari politics.
Maalim would have turned 79 years old today. Maalim was born on October 22, , in Nyali, Mtambwe village in Pemba island. He died on February 17, , less than three months after being sworn in as Zanzibar’s First Vice President.
Seif Sharif Hamad political autobiographer, G. Thomas Burgess described him as a pragmatic individual and who throughout his political life became the antidote of the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi’s (CCM)’s dominant narrative of the past in Zanzibar.
His contestation of narratives of the Zanzibar Revolution and the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar made him the epitome of modern Zanzibari nation
