The unique nature of an artist can be considered art itself. What sets great artists apart may not be their talents but their circumstances. While we know much of our destinies are determined by the decisions we make, remnants of happenstance hover over many of the artists we know and love.

The Making of an Artist
To Concetta, art and life have always been one in the same. Her love of art began at the age of seven, when she found herself fascinated by color. This was around the time she started painting. Even at a young age her peers recognized the Australian native’s creative talent.
Now in San Diego, the place she considers home, Concetta’s days begin at the sight of color. The moment she opens her eyes she feels inspired by the color variations outside her windows and inside her home. Even the different fibers found in her wood floors can captivate this color connoisseur. These everyday sightings are what encourage Concetta to paint extraordinary works of art.

Some women are born with hyper-sensitive eyes that can see the world in ways most of us cannot even imagine. What’s it like to live with this gift?
A few years ago, the artist Concetta Antico discovered that she was carrying a genetic mutation that gave her astonishingly sensitive perception of colour – seeing a spectrum of distinct shades where we only see one.
As she told BBC Future in , even the dullest pebble on the road shimmered like a kaleidoscope.
“The little stones jump out at me with oranges, yellows, greens, blues and pinks,” she says. “I’m kind of shocked when I realise what other people aren’t seeing.”
A seemingly plain green leaf may burst with vivid red shades, while a punnet of tomatoes is a multi-coloured palette of tones – Antico claims she can pick out the ripest fruit at a glance, thanks to subtle differences in its shade that would be invisible to most of us. “The intense colours are speaking to me all the time,” she says today.

Concetta Antico is a world-renowned oil painter who has been pursuing her passion for art for over 20 years. Growing up in Australia, she recounts her passion for art as being some of her earliest memories. Cezanne, van Gogh, and Monet are listed as some of her inspirations from a young age. Growing up, Concetta won numerous awards at school, and her mother predicted she would become a famous artist. When Concetta turned 12, her mother passed away, but she carried her passion for art with her, eventually immigrating to Los Angeles.

Concetta is well-known for being a tetrachromat, which means she can see million colors, over times the amount someone with normal vision could. Known as The Color Queen, her gift was discovered by Dr. Jay Neitz, who told her her gift of tetrachromacy is ultra-rare, with only percent of the world&#;s population having the same ability. Concetta has used this incredible gift and her passion for art to create some of the most organic, dynamic oil paintings that capture color like no other. Antico ne voit pas ces couleurs parce qu’elle est peintre. Elle possède une caractéristique unique, elle est tetrachromate, ce qui veut dire qu’elle a plus de récepteurs dans les yeux pour absorber les couleurs.
Des structures en forme de cones, dans nos yeux, absorbent les différentes longueurs d’onde de couleur et les transmettent à notre cerveau. Une personne normale en a trois, ce qui nous permet de voir environ 1 million de couleurs.
Antico possède quatre cones, ses yeux perçoivent donc environ millions de nuances de couleurs que nous ne voyons pas. “Je suis choquée par le très petit nombre de couleurs que les gens voient,” explique-t-elle.
