Early Life and EducationAlexander Tilloch Galt was born in Chelsea, England, in as the youngest of three sons. His father, John Galt, was a Scottish-born businessman and lobbyist, while his mother's family included influential figures in the publishing industry. Galt's education was largely influenced by his mother as his father was frequently away on business trips.
Emigration to Canada
In , the Galt family emigrated to Canada. Galt's father, John, had been appointed to oversee the development of the town of Guelph. Alexander enrolled at an Anglican seminary in Chambly but left in when his father lost his job and returned to Europe.

Born in England in , Alexander Galt immigrated to Sherbrooke in to work for the newly created British American Land Company, which was chartered to settle large tracts of land in the Eastern Townships. Galt rose steadily in the company, eventually becoming high commissioner in , a post he held until

With the growing railway mania, and the perception that trains would alleviate the economic isolation felt in the Townships, Galt became one of the leading railway promoters of his day. He worked tirelessly to connect the region (Sherbrooke in particular) to the major markets. In , he became President of the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railway, chartered to link Montreal with an ice-free port (Portland, Maine). North America's first international railway, the StL&A was completed in , and sold to the new (and more financially secure) Grand Trunk Railway.

Galt was a Scottish-Canadian businessman, born in Chelsea, who represented Sherbrooke, Quebec. Galt was a key player in Canadian development through the British American Land Company, and as a director of the Grand Trunk Railway. He was Canada&#;s first post-Confederation Finance Minister, and later in life Canada’s first High Commissioner to London.
Galt’s federation resolutions of are acknowledged as having made federation “practical politics” for the first time. Galt&#;s early federalist speeches were important acts of public advocacy, arguing that a federal union could release the sectional conflicts that plagued the old Union of Upper and Lower Canada. He is credited with promoting the economic case for Confederation and designing its financial terms.
In his role as leader of Lower Canada’s English-speaking Protestant minority, Galt worked to secure the rights of his community though a partnership with George-Étienne Cartier.
