OVERVIEW
A Note from the Composer
by Dave Brubeck
“Tritonis is the name of a mythical lake near the Mediterranean. It is said that Athena was born from Zeus’s head on the shores of the lake, Tritonis. It was here, also, the Argonauts became lost and the mythical god Triton guided them back to the sea. In the days of organum and cantus, the interval of the augmented 4th was sometimes called the “devil’s interval.” Rather than think of it in diabolic terms, I always thought the augmented 4th an interval of great consequence. It is the springboard for much of the polytonality that I have used throughout my playing from the early forties to today.”

“Some time ago, a woman in Connecticut, where Dave Brubeck lives, was looking for a pianist to play a wedding. Having got hold of a musicians union directory, she called a number she found under the "Piano" heading. Brubeck was considering taking the job, for scale, the minimum amount of pay the union allows a player to accept. But finally the name attached to the phone number registered with the woman. She shrieked in embarrassment, apologized profusely for what she believed had been an insult, and hung up. "Usually, I play at weddings only for close friends," Brubeck joked later. "But I was thinking it over."
He may also have been thinking about the years following World War II, when his dream was to make scale. The earliest recording in this collection is from , when that dream seemed closer and there was hope of getting out of the poverty of a struggling musician fresh out of the Army. The most recent recording is from Brubeck, now famous

Dave Brubeck, designated a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, was one of the most active and popular musicians in both the jazz and classical worlds. With a career that spanned over six decades, his experiments in odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint, polyrhythm and polytonality remain hallmarks of innovation.
Born into a musical family in Concord, California — his two older brothers were also professional musicians — he began piano lessons with his mother at age four. He was 12 when his father moved the family to a cattle ranch in the foothills of the Sierras. Dave’s life changed dramatically. Piano lessons ended and cowboy life began. He worked with his father on the 45, acre cattle ranch. When he was 14, he started playing in local dance bands on weekends. When he enrolled at the College of the Pacific, in Stockton, California, his intention was to study veterinary medicine and return to the ranch. While working his way through school as a pianist in local nightclubs, the lure of jazz became irresistible and he changed his major to music. Graduating in , he enlisted in the Army, and
