Tenniel was a quiet and introverted person, both as a boy and as an adult. He was content to remain firmly out of the limelight and seemed unaffected by competition or change. As Rodney Engen (his biographer) has stated:

Tenniel’s life and career was that of the supreme gentlemanly outside, living on the edge of respectability.

Early on, Tenniel became a student of the Royal Academy of Arts, but found their teaching unsatisfactory and largely educated himself for the rest of his career. In , he sent his first picture to the exhibition of the Society of British Artists. Nine years later, Tenniel submitted a sixteen-foot cartoon, An Allegory of Justice, to a competition for designs for the mural decoration of the new Palace of Westminster. For this, he received a £ premium and a commission to paint a fresco in the &#;Hall of Poets&#; (the upper waiting hall) in the House of Lords.

Undeterred by the partial loss of sight, Tenniel continued on his path as an artist, eventually becoming a beacon in the late nineteenth century world of illustration.

In , Tenniel replaced Richard (Dicky) Doyle at Punch Magazine as a cartoonist, a position he held until when he replaced his friend John Leech as the principal cartoonist after his death. Steadfast in his routine, Tenniel would continue working at Punch Magazine until his retirement in During his career at Punch, Tenniel would pro
