A short biography

By Alistair Hinton

“TO THOSE WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, IF ANY, AND OTHERS WHO MIND ANYBODY’S BUSINESS BUT THEIR OWN.”
“Dates and places of birth relating to myself given in various works of reference are invariably false.”
“… Certain lexographical canaille, one egregious and notorious specimen particularly, enraged at my complete success in defeating and frustrating their impudent impertinent and presumptuous nosings and pryings into what doesn’t concern them, and actuated, no doubt, by the mean malice of the base-born for their betters, have thought, as they would say, to take it out of me by suggesting that my name isn’t really my name.”
“Insects that are merely noisome like to think that they can also sting.”

—Kaikhosru Sorabji

“A great composer, a great critic, and a prince among men, I know nothing about Sorabji (none of the particulars men usually know of each other, family affairs, education, hobbies, etc.) — nothing, but I think everything that matters, everything, as Jeeves would say, that is ‘of the essence.’”

With all of you at home, let&#;s dwell into some Parsi history of an iconic banker&#;..

HDFC Bank is a giant in its own sense. Financial companies look up to it & Mr. Puri&#;s management style. But we all know nothing endures for ever. Here&#;s a story of a equally prominent Indian bank of its time that is still functional but hardly anyone cares today&#;..

This bank was registered in December with a paid up capital of a meagre 20 lakh. It was founded by a Parsi who started his banking career with Bank of India as an accountant. In those days, even if BOI was Indian sponsored, key managerial positions were all held by Europeans.

At Bank of India, our Parsi bawa reported to a guy called H P Stringfellow, a European ofcourse. He drew a salary of Rs. /- a month while our Parsi bawa was paid Rs. a month.

Not only were there huge pay disparities and humiliations, Europeans dominated banks were partial when it came to giving out credit to Indian entrepreneurs and businesses.

Our Parsi bawa didn&#;t like this. He wanted an Indian Bank managed by Indians. It was not easy. Early s also saw rise of Swadeshi movement and after initial hesitation it was applied to the world of ban

Sorabji N. Pochkhanawala And His Wild Ambition: Barons of Banking

In , a young Parsi assistant accountant with the Bank of India in Bombay had the far-fetched idea that he could set up a bank of his own. When news of this alarmingly ambitious enterprise reached his Manager, H.P. Stringfellow, he sent for the young man seeking confirmation of such vaulting intent.

At first, Stringfellow regarded it as a ‘huge joke’ but when he realised that the young man was serious, gravely advised him to abandon his scheme of a bank promoted and managed by Indians. Stringfellow was concerned about the young man’s career. The young man had served the bank well and since no other Indian had attained the status he had, Stringfellow told him that he would be foolish to throw it all away in the search of a chimera. He asked him to ponder his advice and reconsider his decision. But the young man had already made up his mind and told his manager, ‘Sir, I have made up my mind. I resign the bank’s service. One day, my bank will be bigger than yours.’ In this seemingly precipitate manner was the decision taken from which a premier banking institution in the country was

“The benefits of a good bank are not restricted to the four walls of its banking hall, nor are they limited by the frontiers of its banking business; they transcend far into the realms of commerce and industry and every other branch of economic activity. The value of ‘national banking’ in the promotion of national good is obvious and undeniable.”

These are the words of great visionary and founder of first SWADESHI bank—CENTRAL BANK OF INDIA, Sir  Sorabji Pochkhanawala.

Sir  Sorabji Pochkhanawala  was born in Bombay on 9th August in  a respectable middle class Parsi family. Fate was harsh on Sorabji as he lost his father at the tender age of six.

Sorabji joined Chartered Bank as a clerk with a salary of Rs. 20 per month. He passed the book keeping examinations of the London Chamber of Commerce. He became the first Indian to be a Certified Associate of the Institute of Bankers, London.

Sorabji Pochkhanwala was only twenty eight years old when he started the bank. With industry, foresight and diligence coupled with passion, he made Central Bank of India the largest bank in India within twelve years. He started as a manager in and was elevated as Managing
