Rutti jinnah biography of alberta

READERS OF NON-FICTION often get their share of disbelief in biographies, many of them so much larger-than-life, they surpass fiction. In a revealing new biography, Mr and Mrs Jinnah, veteran journalist Sheela Reddy unravels the story of a brilliant couple, Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Ruttie Petit, who defied convention to reach the heights of political and social attainment, only to find their marriage floundering on the rocky path to independence.

Here you have a man who dreamt up a new nation, a beauteous Parsi princess with an unconventional dark side and a shadowy political marriage that ended in a flawed victory for one and a devastating tragedy for the other.

The book has all the ingredients of an Indian Downton Abbey, offering an envious insight into the legendary wealth and foppish lifestyles of Bombay’s privileged mill owners in the early years of the century. The narrative focuses on the fragile and doomed relationship between the protagonists, with politics taking a backseat to their social interactions.

There are several biographies of Pakistan’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, whose life has been dissected and, in some cases, deified to such an extent we are in

A Look at the Personal Life of Jinnah: Ruttie Jinnah&#;s last letter to her husband

Darwaish

Last week, while surfing though flickr, I came across a wonderful collection of mostly black & white photos by Dr. Ghulam Nabi Kazi. His collection has a major section Plain Mr. Jinnah dedicated to Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah&#;s rare photographs and some of his personal letters that not many people have ever read. Dr. Kazi is doing a great service by preserving all those historic photographs and letters for us and uploading them on flickr for public viewing. The one that I found most interesting, and which made me write this post, was the last letter written byRuttenbai &#;Ruttie&#; Petitto her husband &#;J&#;, as she used to call him. Ruttie was given an Islamic name Mariam when she converted to Islam and married Jinnah in Ruttie originally wrote this letter in Paris on October 5, but re-wrote it in Marseilles and posted it from there. The letter is beautifully written and gives you some idea of marriage and personal life of Jinnah. For ATP reader&#;s interest, a typed text of the letter has also been included in this post.

Ruttenbai Jinnah, Mr Jinnah`s second wife, remains a mystery to this day; she is perhaps more of an enigma than the Quaid. (Mr Jinnah was first married to his cousin Emibai at age 16 before he left for London; she died while he was still there.)

And it is tragic that the woman who was perhaps the one person whom Mr Jinnah loved and cherished the most at a point in his life, for whom he defied convention and risked his political career, has been deprived of an authentic biography.

There are, at most, only two books dedicated solely to her Ruttie Jinnah, the story of a great friendship by Kanji Dwarkadas and Ruttie Jinnah The Story Told and Untold by Khwaja Razi Haider.

These two books are not readily available; and worse still, neither of them delves deep into Ruttie`s childhood, other than the fact that she was avidly fond of literature and the arts, and that she was the daughter of a Parsi magnate Sir Dinshaw Petit, who was a friend of Mr Jinnah.

And although biographies of Mr Jinnah, including Stanley Wolpert`s Jinnah of Pakistan, and Jinnah Creator of Pakistan by Hector Bolitho, as well as Freedom at Midnight by Dominique La Pierre and Larry Collins, dedicate several pa

The real Mrs Jinnah: New book offers insights into the life of misunderstood, fascinating Ruttie Petit

By Maya Palit

“What put it into her silly little head to suddenly fall in love with a man old enough to be her father?” mused Sarojini Naidu’s son Jaisoorya, in a letter to his sister Padmaja. He was referring to a scandal that had shaken Bombay’s high society and political circles in , when Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the year-old leader of the All India Muslim League and eventual founder of Pakistan, fell in love with a rich year-old Parsi woman named Ruttie Petit.

Jaisoorya’s thoughts weren’t half as acerbic as the criticism that came the Jinnahs’ way. The young couple’s marriage in , after much speculation, created a great uproar because of their religious differences: Ruttie’s family was furious, various newspapers implied that she was a gold-digger, and the Parsi community erupted in protests. Despite the fact that Ruttie’s own liberal circles, which included Motilal Nehru’s daughter, did not take particular umbrage to the inter-religious angle, everyone was appalled by the couple’s difference in age. Ruttie was judged incessantly for being spoilt, entitled because
