Botschafter des Friedens

Begonnen hat alles vor fünf Jahren in der lebhaftesten Einkaufsstraße Istanbuls: Genauer gesagt auf den Kopfsteinpflastern, über die täglich wohl rund zwei Millionen Menschen flanieren, vor den Geschäften an denen mehrmals stündlich die historische rote Bimmelbahn vorbeirattert, die zum Symbol des Stadtteils Beyoğlu geworden ist.

Auf der Unabhängigkeitstrasse, der İstiklal Caddesi, in der sich seit einigen Jahren kurdische Lautenspieler neben Hang spielende Rastafaris, amerikanische Popsongs covernde Gitarrenspieler neben Didgeridoo und Santur vereinende Newage-Hippies reihen und seit einigen Monaten syrische Oudspieler ihr Können unter Beweis stellen.

Damals, erzählt Michal, die Frontfrau von "Light in Babylon", hätten sie und Julien sich getroffen und das "ungeheure musikalische Potential, das uns Istanbul als multikulturelle Stadt bot" entdeckt. Sie hätten sich auf die Suche nach anderen Musikern gemacht und seien auf Metehan gestoßen, der für sich alleine auf der İstiklal Santur spielte – ein Seiteninstrument, bei dem die auf ein Holzbrett gespannten Saiten mit Klöppeln geschlagen werden.

Michal Elia Kamal uses personal experiences and her Iranian background to create songs that connect with people from across the globe.

Raised in an Ashkenazi community in Tel Aviv, Israeli-Iranian singer Michal Elia Kamal realized her dark hair, brown eyes and Iranian background made her different from her peers. But that is what led her to grow an affinity toward singing and uniting different , along with Light in Babylon musicians Metehan Cifci on Santour, guitarist Julien Demarque, percussionist Stuart Dickson and bassist Jack Butler, perform all over the world today, but come from humble beginnings, which Kamal recounted during a Skype she decided to pursue music full-time, Kamal left her job and university studies in Israel to embark on musical journey around the world. Her travels took her to countries across Europe and India before she eventually settled in Istanbul, Turkey.“When I discovered Istanbul, it was like a child discovering Disneyland and as a musician it meant a great deal of potential,” she long after Kamal and Demarque, who today is her husband, met Cifci. Their project is the fusion of different ethnicities and cultures, the singer is Israeli from Iranian origin, the santur player is Turkish the guitarist is French and they cooperate with musicians from different origin as well (Turkish, English and more). With the strength and openness of their youth and the various musical influences they have, they intuitively created a original colourful blend of their inner voices with flavours that would carry the imagination on a travel trough the Middle east and beyond.
