Dr rick sacra biography for kids
Medical missionary Rick Sacra has been evacuated three times—all from the same place.
He’s spent a career at a mission hospital in Liberia, leaving when he’s in physical danger and then returning again and again—after civil war, political unrest, and Ebola epidemics.

If you ask why he keeps going back, he’ll laugh and tell you he’s stubborn.
But it’s more than that.
“When something happens to the people you love—as hard as it is to be right there with them, it’s even worse to be far away feeling helpless,” fellow missionary and longtime friend Dave Decker said.
It’s the emotion you feel when your child gets sick at school, or your sister in another city gets into a fordon accident. It’s how you felt if you were out of the country when the planes hit the World Trade Center. It’s what made Bonhoeffer return to Germany, what made Gandhi head back to India.
It’s like that, but not quite. Because Rick was born near Boston. He went to college in Rhode Island and med
Ebola Patient Dr. Rick Sacra Gets 'Everything We Had'
Doctors treating the third U.S. Ebola patient, Dr. Rick Sacra, have given him every treatment they can think of, and say something seems to be working because he’s getting better every day.
Sacra, 51, got two transfusions of blood serum from Ebola survivor Dr. Kent Brantly, who flew to Nebraska to donate his blood. He’s also getting an experimental drug — his doctors won’t say what — and careful testing of important compounds called electrolytes, to keep his heart and other organs functioning properly.
“We just administered everything we had access to, basically,” said Dr. Phil Smith of the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where Sacra is being treated at a special biocontainment unit.
Sacra, who was flown to Nebraska from Liberia last week, is steadily improving, said his wife, Debbie Sacra. “We are amazed at how quickly Rick's condition seemed to turn around after he was admitted on Friday. As his friend Kent Brantly said on national TV, we attribute his recovery to both faith and science,” Debbie Sacra told a news conference Thursday.
He was well enough to try 10 minutes on an exercise bike in his room, she
Qualified and prepared
In July , representatives from the U.S. State Department visited Nebraska Medicine to take a closer look at the capabilities of our bed Biocontainment Unit. In early September , we successfully treated our first patient, Rick Sacra, MD. Dr. Sacra contracted the virus while treating patients in West Africa. He was discharged from our Biocontainment Unit in late September
We received our second patient, Ashoka Mukpo, in early October Mr. Mukpo was declared Ebola-free and discharged later that month. The following month, a third patient arrived in the Biocontainment Unit. Martin Salia, MD, was exposed to Ebola during his service treating patients in West Africa. Tragically, his disease was very advanced by the time he was flown back to the United States. Dr. Salia died a short time later. A plaque honoring his service and sacrifice hangs on the wall of the Biocontainment Unit.
The unit has been operational since and is one of 10 such units in the country equipped to handle an outbreak of this nature. Our physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and staff are specially trained and participate in regular drills on the specific protocols an
