After Titanic disappeared into the Atlantic in the early hours of April 15, , nothing more was ever seen of First Officer William Murdoch. Presumed drowned his body was never recovered. The effect on the Murdoch family back home was obviously deeply felt (refer to The Effect on the Murdoch Family on the left of this page), but also work mates and friends felt his loss.
Murdoch's cousin of the same age William Black, who he had likely spent time as a child, had by become the captain of a cargo steamer named the Borderer. By April their ship was on its way from Calais to New York when on April 13 and 14 she passed near an icefield. The crew saw two large icebergs in Latitude North, Longitude West. However, the Borderer had no wireless, so Captain Black was not able to warn other ships. It was only when he arrived at New York few days later that Black discovered the sinking of the Titanic, and the death of his cousin. ()

Thirty-nine year-old William McMaster Murdoch, with an "ordinary master's certificate" and a reputation as a "canny and dependable man" (3.) had climbed through the ranks of the White Star Line to become one of its foremost senior officers. It was only natural that he was selected to be Titanic's Chief Officer, with sixteen years of maritime experience now behind him.
Demotion and a maiden voyage
By the end of March, , Titanic's construction and fitting-out drew to a close and the crew began to gather for her sea trials:
"The junior officers Pitman, Boxhall, Lowe and Moody received telegrams from the White Star Line marine superintendent to report to the company's Liverpool office at 9am on 26 March to pick up their tickets for Belfast. Departing from Liverpool at 10 o'clock that night they arrived at Belfast and joined Titanic at about 12 noon on 27 March, reporting on board to Chief Officer William Murdoch."(7.)
Sea trials began on April 2nd. in the Belfast Lough and lasted for less than a day.
