William Clark Biography
William Clark is most famous for his co-leadership of the epic Lewis and Clark Expedition of Less well-known are his contributions to American Indian diplomacy, which occupied a large portion of the remainder of his career. If not for the positive relations maintained by Clark with several tribes during the crucial early years of westward expansion, the map of the United States might look significantly different today. Blending fairness, honesty and strength with patience, respect and understanding, Clark recognized the personal dignity of American Indians, honoring their cultures and religious beliefs.
William Clark was born in to John and Ann Rogers Clark in Caroline County, Virginia, the ninth of ten children. He grew up on his father's plantation with its many acres and slaves, enjoying life in the open country. Though he had little formal education, he acquired the manners and accomplishments of a Virginia gentleman of his day, including riding, hunting, surveying, and managing an estate. Biography of William Clark
William Clark was born in Virginia, USA in As a teenager, his family moved to Kentucky. In , Clark enlisted in the local militia and in , he joined the federal army. During his time in the army, Clark rose to the rank of lieutenant and commander of a regiment. One of Clark's subordinates was Meriwether Lewis, with whom he developed a close friendship. In , Clark retired from the military and managed his family estate in Kentucky. It was during this time that Lewis invited Clark to join an expedition.
Explorations and Achievements
In , President Jefferson appointed Clark as a brigadier general of the Louisiana Territory militia. Following Lewis's tragic death, Clark was offered the position of governor of Louisiana, but he declined. In , Clark became the governor of the Missouri Territory. The following year, he led an exploratory expedition from the Mississippi River to Prairie du Chien.
