From Foe to Friend
Umar (RA) was once a fierce enemy of Islam. He hated Muslims and even planned to harm the Prophet (ﷺ)! But one day, he heard his sister reciting the Quran. The words of Surah Taha softened his heart, and he ran to the Prophet (ﷺ) and declared, “I accept Islam!”
The Khalifa Who Walked at Night
As Khalifa, Umar (RA) wore patched clothes and secretly walked the streets at night to ensure no one was hungry or mistreated. Once, he carried a sack of flour on his back to feed a poor widow and her children.
Justice for All

The life of Al Farooq Umar ibn Al-Khattab (R.A.) is a shining page of Islamic history, which outshines and supersedes all other histories. The history of all nations put together does not contain even a part of what his life contained of noble conduct, glory, sincerity, jihad, and calling others for the sake of Allah.
His Ancestry and Attributes:
His full name is Umar ibn Al-Khattab ibn Nufayl ibn Abdul- Uzza. He was known as Abu Hafs and earned the nickname of Al Farooq (the Criterion) because he showed his Islam openly in Makkah and through him Allah distinguished between disbelief and faith. He was born in AC (Cristian Era), thirteen years after Amul-Fil (the year of the Elephant). His father was Al-Khattab ibn Nufayl, and his grandfather Nufayl was one of those whom Quraish Tribe used to refer for judgment. His mother was Hantamah bint Hashim bin Al Mugheerah.

Umar was considered a pious Muslim who played a role in compiling the first Quran. However, in AD at the age of 39, on his way to murder Muhammad, he underwent a radical transformation after being influenced by his friend and sister who had already converted.
His name is Abu Hafsh, Umar al Faruq Ibn Khattab Ibn Nufail Ibn Abdil Uzza Ibn Adi Ibn Ka&#;ab Ibn Luay Ibn Ghalib al Qurasy. His pedigree meets the pedigree of the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- on his fourth grandfather, Ka&#;ab Ibn Luaiy Ibn Ghalib. He got used to endure difficult and exhausting days, and got smacked if his work was bad. Those experiences helped to shape him into a harsh man.
