Cellist Truls Mørk has delivered some memorable performances as a featured soloist with symphony orchestras throughout Europe and North America. His interpretations of works by such composers as Dimitri Shostakovich, Antonin Dvorak, and Benjamin Britten have often prompted critics to use the term electrifying to describe his talent with the rather unwieldy string instrument. Hailed as a significant new presence on the music scene, especially in Europe by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writer Andrew Druckenbrod, Mørk won his first Grammy Award in for his recording of a Britten cello concerto.
Mørk was born in in Bergen, Norway&#x;s second largest city. Although his father was a professional cellist, Mørk&#x;s formal musical training began with the piano, his mother&#x;s instrument, at the age of seven. Truls Mørk is a celebrated artist who performs with the most distinguished orchestras including the Orchestre de Paris, Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, Concertgebouworkest, Münchner Philharmoniker, Philharmonia and London Philharmonic orchestras and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. In North America he has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic. Conductor collaborations include Esa-Pekka Salonen, David Zinman, Manfred Honeck, Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Simon Rattle, Kent Nagano, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Christoph Eschenbach, amongst others.

Known for his “compelling performances, combining fierce intensity and passion with integrity and grace,” Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk has long taken audiences on compelling musical journeys. One of the pre-eminent cellists of our time, he was the first Scandinavian to be a finalist and prizewinner in the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition in He was also a prizewinner in the Naumberg Competition in New York in and the Cassado Cello Competition in Florence in , and received the UNESCO Prize at the European Radio-Union competition in Bratislava. Born on 25 April in Bergen, Norway, his parents were professional musicians; his father John Fritjof Mørk was a cellist and his mother Turid Otterbech a pianist. “My mother began teaching me the piano when I was seven years old,” he writes, “but it didn&#;t work out because my progress did not keep up with her great ambition for me.” Truls tried his hands on the violin, but eventually his father decided that he should play the cello. “I was happy to play the cello because… I felt a certain affinity for the cello since my father played so beautifully; I knew how it was supposed to sound.”
