Getting to know an artist can help you to understand their work. When you arrive at the cottage, 30 miles or so from London, where Michael Turner lives and works, you find yourself really entering his world, albeit not immediately, it has to be said. In fact, first of all, he and his wife give you a warm welcome in their elegant living room whose windows overlook a large garden in full bloom.

Michael Turner
Michael Turner, born in Harrow, Middlesex in , developed a passion for aviation and motor racing from a young age. His early interest in aircraft recognition and drawing was inspired by the R.A.F. during WWII. A visit to the Isle of Man in sparked his enthusiasm for motor racing, leading him to attend numerous motorsport events. After completing his education and National Service, Turner worked in advertising before becoming a freelance artist in He traveled extensively to capture the authenticity of his subjects, attending major race tracks and flying in various aircraft to inform his aviation paintings.
Turner is a founder member and President of The Guild of Aviation Artists and an Honorary Fellow of the Guild of Motoring Artists. His work has been exhibited globally, and he has published six books featuring his paintings. Turner’s clients include racing drivers, teams, sponsors, and military organizations, reflecting his dedication to both aviation and motorsport art.

Michael Turner was born in Harrow, Middlesex, in . Raised in the suburbs of London during the Second World War, he was inspired by the exploits of the R.A.F. and developed an early talent for aircraft recognition, drawing aeroplanes in his school exercise books to the chagrin of his teachers. This enthusiasm for aviation found a parallel passion in the thrill of motor racing after a holiday visit to the Isle of Man in , where he chanced to see the first post war revival of the British Empire Trophy Race. From that moment, with the indulgence of his parents until he reached driving age, Michael attended as many motor sport events as possible, including the first ever meetings at Silverstone and Goodwood and the Jersey Road Races. His formal education completed, Michael spent a year at Art College followed by two years National Service with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Three years in advertising studios in London provided valuable experience and in he went freelance. As with his biggest influences Frank Wootton and Terence Cuneo, Michael Turner has become famous for his automotive and aviation artwork. Such is the breadth and length of his career that it’s unlikely any Magneto reader is not familiar with his work. Indeed, it’s quite possible that his paintings, in one form or another, will have been seen by more people than that of any other automotive artist.
We’ll concentrate here on his automotive works, leaving aside his many book covers, magazine illustrations and aviation paintings. Michael counts two of the latter among the works of which he is most proud; both done for the RAF Museum, one celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee flypast over Windsor Castle and the other was painted to mark the RAF’s centenary.
