Young John Kiriamiti is kicked out of secondary school and his family orders him to return to his rural hometown of Thuita. He does not stay for long though, eventually making his way back to Nairobi, where he becomes a pickpocket under the alias Jack Zollo.
Jack becomes involved in his first "big job" when asked by his friend Captain Ngugi to be an accomplice in robbing a white man. Jack walks away with six grand, but not without feeling guilty for his actions. While out to clear his head, Jack runs into his sister Connie, whom he has not seen since running away to Nairobi years ago. Connie invites Jack to her and her husband's house, where they watch the news and hear a report of the robbery in which Jack was involved. Jack becomes paranoid and leaves Connie's house.

My Life with a Criminal
Milly recounts her life leading up to that fateful day when Jack was waiting outside her school to return her ID that he found on the ground. She discusses the dates that Jack would take her on and how they had to be conscious of her family’s desires for them, such as not having sex before marriage.
Milly and Jack move in together, and Milly begins picking up on signs that indicate that Jack is not a car salesman, as he’s led her to believe, but a criminal. When the realization hits her, she is shocked that she has been lied to by Jack for this long and struggles with her emotions regarding the situation.
Milly tries to put aside her worry over realizing Jack is a criminal and live a normal life with him. She routinely tries to get Jack to admit that he is a criminal, but he always evades her questions and begins accusing her of being mentally ill. The first time we met, I was astounded by how youthful John Kiriamiti looked. That was in Murang’a two years ago.
He had donned a cap over his white hair and sports white sideburns reminiscent of Daudi Kabaka – he actually does keep his just like Daudi Kabaka, he intimated. A little known fact is that he used to be Daudi Kabaka’s dancer back in the s.
He was unperturbed by how surprised I was. In my mind, I thought the person who was arguably Kenya’s most famous ex-convict would look a bit more intimidating, with his looks worn away by having spent a total of 16 years in prison.
But no, he expects that every time he meets someone new. “Most people expect a big guy when they are meeting me,” he said.
“But I have a very innocent face.” That, he certainly does. In real life, that is. Pictures do not quite capture how harmless he looks.
