Introduction
In his book, Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography, Dominic Crossan critically and radically challenged the traditional view of Jesus of Nazareth. Crossan subjected the four Gospels to critical evaluation and employed the method of historical criticism in his attempt to determine whether the main Gospel claims are based on factual matters or not. In the final analysis, Crossan challenged and refuted many biblical accounts of Jesus Christ in the Gospel. For instance, he exposed the many inconsistencies in the biblical account of the Birth of Jesus Christ and demonstrated that these accounts are spurious and not based on historical facts (Crossan, , pp. ). In this book, Crossan also claimed that Jesus Christ was a critic of the tradition he inherited, and that he would, most likely, critique how Christianity has interpreted him for the last
Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography
Crossan is a good writer. Some of his information, especially the anthropological information, gave me new insights on Jesus. But his argument was less than convincing. I'm wondering if I should read the academic version of his material; perhaps this version leaves out the data that would make his case stronger. He may expect a popular audience to be less demanding. But it's hard for me to accept that – wouldn't you put your best examples in your smaller, popularized book?

In Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography, John Dominic Crossan writes what he calls a “startling account of what we can know about the life of Jesus.” [1] Crossan, who currently holds a Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies position at DePaul University in Chicago, was co-chair of the Jesus Seminar from until , and has written over twenty-five books on the historical Jesus and early Christianity. [2] Written for a popular audience, Jesus portrays Crossan’s personal “reconstruction of the historical Jesus derived from twenty-five years of scholarly research.” [3] In this work Crossan seeks to outline the life of the historical Jesus that he believes lay beneath the canonical Gospel accounts in a manner as accurate and intellectually honest as possible. [4] Upon reading this book, the reader will see that Crossan has assembled a variety of interpretations that, when combined with his theological and philosophical presuppositions and understanding of the canonical Gospel narratives, makes for a potentially persuasive and fairly historical narrative of the life of the historical Jesus.

The analysis covers social, political, economic, and spiritual considerations. These considerations are all grounded in the central thematic contention that Jesus was a radical liberal activist, seeking moral justice for all and increased openness to faith by all.
