Historicity and Romance in the Verse of H. E. Sayeh
Amir Hushang Ebtehaj—the renowned poet of Iran also known by his pen name, H. A. Sayeh—passed away on August 10, , in Cologne, Germany. Without a doubt he was one of the pillars of Persian literature and will be greatly missed. His works have been translated in many languages, including English.
The following article by Aria Fani was first published in Peyk # (Jan-Feb ). We thought it would be appropriate to reprint it here. PCC and AIAP will jointly have a commemoration for Sayeh on September 17, , at the Qualcomm Building Q.

A poem in translation is a linguistic-cultural unit uprooted from its land of origin and replanted in unaccustomed terrain. The most drastic loss consequent to this transfer is perhaps most frequently the poem’s original cadence, its rhyme and meter. Behind this lofty mountain,
Beside the pale sea,

I was madly in love.
As if Gali

The renowned Iranian poet, master of modern ghazal and scholar of Persian literature Amir Houshang Ebtehaj, who also worked under the pen name H.E. Sayeh (meaning shadow), died on Aug. 10 in Cologne, Germany, at the age of
Mr. Ebtehaj was reportedly hospitalized for a few days in June after experiencing a kidney-related health problem.
The poet’s daughter, Yalda Ebtehaj, announced her father’s death in a poetic tweet: “Look, look around, and search this house, where you are strangers, so explore it as visitors. Our Sayeh has now joined those who passed away long ago.”
Amir Houshang Ebtehaj was born to Mirza Agha-Khan Ebtehaj and Fatemeh Rafat in February in Rasht, the capital of the northern province of Gilan. His father, Mirza-Khan Ebtehaj, was the medical director of Rasht’s Poursina Hospital.

Houshang Ebtehaj was born in in Rasht , North of Iran. He published his first book when he was only 19 years old. He chose ‘Sayeh /sa:yeh/ as his pen name, which means ‘shadow / ‘shade. Ebtehaj was active in different literary movements and gatherings and took considerable part in various literary magazines such as Sokhan and Kavian.
After the Iranian Revolution, Sayeh spent some time in prison for his ideas.
He has several works in poetry almost all of which are well-known in the world of Persian literature. In his poems, he is shown as a highly motivated person in love, who has gone through years of pain and suffering.
He also worked and did some meaningful researches on Hafez poems that is of high value.
From among the contemporary Iranian poets, Ebtehaj has a great love and respect for Ostad Shahriar, the writer of Heidar baba / Heydar Ba Ba a long and deep poem in Turkish, who seems to have played an important role in his life.
