was not a kind year for Britain&#;s Sebastian Coe. Considered the world&#;s greatest middle distance runner for over 4 years, The Olympic Silver medalist at meters and Gold medalist at meters was having a very inconsistent year. Along with his poor performances, the meter world record-holder () and mile world record holder () was experiencing chronic fatigue, glandular fever, and muscle aches, unlike anything he ever experienced before. Even his father and lifelong coach, Peter Coe, whose revolutionary training methods had driven his son to the top of the sport, couldn&#;t comprehend what was happening either.

As Coe said in the film &#;Born to Run, &#;The Olympics (in Los Angeles) in &#;84 seemed as far away as anything I ever saw.&#;

By the end of , Coe had been found to have toxoplasmosis, a debilitating condition which left him in an almost sedentary state, with medications whose side effects included vomiting. Hospitalized, losing weight and still feeling very fatigued, one thing was able to come out of this

Although the brilliant career of Seb Coe included a number of disappointments, the highlights were such that he must be considered as one of the greatest middle-distance runners of all time. After winning the British 1, metres title at both Youth and Junior level, his first major international championship success came when he won the European indoor metres title at Dortmund with a new British indoor record of seconds. Within the next month he had twice improved the record and later in the year headed the British outdoor record, clocking at Crystal Palace in September. Although this fine performance ranked no higher than eighth on the world all-time list, the breaking of the barrier placed Coe early among the world’s elite and he was to confirm his place in spectacular fashion the following year.
