Claudio Arrau is among the most durable and versatile pianists of the twentieth century. His career extends more than eighty years, and in that time he has distinguished himself in a phenomenal range of music&#x;from Baroque master J. S. Bach to Romantics such as Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt, and from the towering genius Ludwig van Beethoven to key Impressionist Claude Debussy. Throughout much of his career Arrau has also performed at a pace that might prove exhausting to less disciplined musicians: in his most hectic period, stretching from the s into the s, he annually gave more than one hundred performances and still managed to produce a vast catalog of recorded works. Even into the s and &#x;80s his schedule has remained relatively formidable. Arrau, however, seems undaunted by the demands of his career, and he dismisses the belief that a performer&#x;s abilities must inevitably decline. I think an artist in his development doesn&#x;t necessarily have an up and down, he told Joseph Horowitz in the New York Times. In most cases an artist&#x;s development only goes up.

El repertorio de Arrau, muy vasto, abarcaba desde Bach hasta los autores contemporáneos, pasando por Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Schubert, Chopin o Debussy. Arrau no fue sólo uno de los más destacados pianistas del siglo XX (cuyo magisterio ha quedado conservado en sus numerosas grabaciones discográficas) sino también uno de los últimos continuadores de una tradición interpretativa que hunde sus raíces en Franz Liszt: aquella que considera el virtuosismo técnico únicamente como un medio para servir a la música, y no como un fin en sí mismo.

Claudio León Arrau (b. 6 February ; d. 9 June ), Chilean pianist. Early recognized as a prodigy, Arrau became one of the most accomplished Latin American musicians of the twentieth century. As a youth from Chillán, Arrau was sent on a grant from the Chilean government to study at the prestigious Julius Stern Conservatory in Berlin under the tutelage of Martin Krause from until During his tenure in Germany he earned numerous honors, including the Liszt and Ibach prizes. Throughout the s and s Arrau toured Europe and the Americas before settling in the United States after the outbreak of World War II.
Arrau was known for his slow tempos and lack of ostentation, a style that emphasized the inherent beauty of the music rather than the skill of the musician. In , Arrau played a series of recitals in Berlin featuring the complete keyboard works of Bach. After this performance, he announced that he would no longer publicly perform any Bach, as he felt the piano could not do the composer justice.
