Born in Milan in into a family of musicians, Nino Rota was first a student of Orefice and Pizzetti. Then, still a child, he moved to Rome where he completed his studies at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in with Alfredo Casella. In the meantime, he had become an 'enfant prodige', famous both as a composer and as an orchestra conductor. His first oratorio, "L'infanzia di San Giovanni Battista," was performed in Milan and Paris as early as and his lyrical comedy, "Il Principe Porcaro," was composed in From to , Nino Rota lived in the USA. He won a scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Philadelphia where he attended classes in composition taught by Rosario Scalero and classes in orchestra taught by Fritz Reiner. He returned to Italy and earned a degree in literature from the University of Milan. Giovanni “Nino” Rota was born in Milano, Italia, on 3 Dec , the son of Ercole Rota, a teacher at the Istituto Tecnico Commerciale Nicola Moreschi di Milano, & Ernesta Rinaldi, a pianist. From an artistic family, Rota’s paternal grandfather, Pirro Rota, was a theater set designer in Forli, & his maternal grandfather, Giovanni Rinaldi, was a pianist known to some as “lo Chopin italiano,” or the “Italian Chopin.”[1][2]
Considered a child prodigy, Rota’s mother wrote that he displayed an ability to harmonize & improvise on the piano by the age of 8. His first oratorio was composed just shy of the age of 11, & a three-act comedy based on a fairy tale from Hans Christian Andersen came at the age of He left standard schooling for the Milan conservatory in the early ‘20s, & later attended the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome, before winning a scholarship to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in the United States, where he studied in the early ‘30s.[3][1]

Giovanni “Nino” Rota, commonly referred to as Nino Rota, was an Italian composer and pianist, born on 3rd December In a career that spanned close to 46 years, Rota was known mostly for his tremendous capacity to produce large number of film scores in a relatively short period of time. Rota’s most notable works were for films of Italian directors Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti. Averaging around 3 film scores per year, Rota is also said to have worked most ferociously in the period of , where he would produce close to 10 film scores per year. Apart from his efforts in the film industry, Rota managed to work on around ten operas, five ballets and several other orchestral, choral and chamber works.
Rota spent much of his early years familiarizing himself with basic techniques of composition, and devoted much of his energy to maneuvering his skills to set in well with the traditional trajectories of classical music.
