EARLY LIFE IN GENOA AND PORTUGAL
Christopher Columbus was born in the republic of Genoa. His father, Domenico Colombo, was a wool weaver, wool merchant, tavern keeper, and political appointee. Columbus's early education was limited, although he read widely after reaching adulthood. He went to sea at an early age and sailed the Mediterranean on merchant vessels, traveling as far east as the island of Chios. In the mids, he settled in Portugal, joining other Italian merchants in Lisbon. Columbus sailed north to England and Ireland, and possibly as far as Iceland. He also visited the Madeira and Canary Islands and the African coast as far south as the Portuguese trading post at São Jorge da Mina (in modern Ghana).
In or , Columbus married Felipa Moniz, member of a prominent Italian-Portuguese family. Her father and brother were hereditary captains of the island of Porto Santo, and her mother came from a noble family. In Felipa bore Columbus a son named Diogo (Diego in Spanish), who would later have a bureaucratic career in the lands his father claimed for Spain. Columbus's marriage provided

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Genoese Republic (now part of Italy on or before October 31st, He was an Italian explorer and navigator who would also become a colonizer and re-discoverer of the Americas. Born to a middle-class family in his hometown of Genoa, his early years were spent learning astronomy, mathematics, navigation and cartography. After a few years of such education, in his early teens Columbus was hired to work on a merchant ship. Later, in his early twenties, Columbus worked as an apprentice to a business agent. After a time, he then became a full-fledged business agent for the Spinolas, the Centuriones, and the Di Negros, all prominent merchant families of Genoa.

In May of , Columbus had an opportunity to sail with an armed convoy of ships to Northern Europe. During this voyage, Columbus was able to visit Bristol, England and Galway, Ireland. Christopher Columbus was born in the Republic of Genoa, in what is today Northwestern Italy. His father was a middle-class wool merchant, though it was relatively humble beginnings for what he later became. Columbus learnt to sail from an early age and later worked as a business agent, travelling around Europe to England, Ireland and later along the West coast of Africa. He was not a scholar but was an enthusiastic self-educated man, who read extensively on astronomy, science and navigation. He also became fluent in Latin, Portuguese and Spanish.

When this failed, and appeals to the French and English courts were also rejected, Columbus found himself in Spain, still struggling to win backing for his project. Finally, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella agreed to sponsor the expedition, and on 3 August , Columbus and his fleet of three ships, the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Niña, set sail across the Atlantic.
