Early Life and Career

Gottlieb von Jagow () was born into a distinguished noble family. His father, Carl von Jagow, was a feudal estate owner (Rittergutsbesitzer). He studied law at the Universities of Bonn and Berlin. After working some years with the Prussian administration he entered the diplomatic service in where he advanced swiftly. Due to his frail health Jagow spent most of his career in Italy.     Nach juristischen Studien trat J. in die preuß. Verwaltung ein und wählte, durch Bülow gefördert, die diplomatische Laufbahn. kam die Ernennung zum Vortragenden Rat. wurde er Gesandter in Luxemburg, Botschafter in Rom. Jan. Nov. leitete er als Staatssekretär ( auch preuß. Staatsminister) das Auswärtige Amt. Er war in diesen Jahren der gleichgesinnte außenpolitische Berater Bethmann Hollwegs und hatte Anteil an Entscheidungen, die zur Auslösung des 1. Weltkriegs führten und seinen Verlauf bestimmten.

    JAGOW, Gottlieb von, German Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs: b. 26 June Educated at the University of Bonn, he entered the diplomatic service in He first made his mark as private secretary to Prince Bülow, former Imperial Chancellor. He became Minister to Rome in and Ambassador in During the Turco-Italian war he conducted important negotiations with the Italian government and, it is said, prevented a war between Austria and Italy at the time. He was recalled to Berlin and appointed foreign secretary on the death of Kiderlen-Waechter (q.v.) in A quiet, retiring and scholarly man, he was one of the worst speakers in the Reichstag. Both the former American and British ambassadors to Germany expressed their appreciation of his unfailing courtesy. According to Mr. Gerard (&#;My Four Years in Germany&#;) von Jagow was forced out of office in November by an agitation against him on account of his lack of force in defending government policy in the Reichstag.
