SUDBURY – Les Franco-Ontariens perdent un grand bâtisseur. L’historien sudburois, Gaétan Gervais, s’est éteint dans la nuit de vendredi à samedi, à l’âge de 74 ans.

Un nouvel hommage pour l'historien Gaétan Gervais
Les deux nouvelles écoles publiques de langue française qui ont ouvert leurs portes en septembre dernier à Oakville ont maintenant un nom. Les élèves fréquenteront dorénavant l'école secondaire Gaétan-Gervais et l'école élémentaire du Chêne du Conseil scolaire Viamonde.
Gaétan Gervais est historien et a été pendant longtemps professeur à l'Université Laurentienne de Sudbury. Il est l'un des créateurs du drapeau franco-ontarien.
« Nous sommes fiers que la communauté ait décidé de rendre hommage à Monsieur Gervais, c'est une excellente façon de transmettre le legs de ce pionnier de l'Ontario français aux élèves », affirme Ronald Marion, le président du conseil. Quant au chêne, c'est un arbre que l'on retrouve beaucoup à Oakville, comme le nom de la municipalité le laisse entendre.
Les deux écoles occupent actuellement le même bâtiment et comptent au total élèves.

Starting in , French explorer Samuel de Champlain travelled – and mapped – parts of Ontario. He followed the water: the Ottawa River, Lake Nipissing, the Great Lakes and Georgian Bay.
On August 1, Champlain and his First Nations guides and allies arrived on the shores of Georgian Bay, near what is now Penetanguishene, where he was greeted by Chief Aenon of the Wendat (Huron).
He spent the next eight months with the Wendat and Anishinaabe before departing for Quebec the following spring. This was the longest, most extensive and westernmost of his travels in the lands that would one day become Ontario.

Cet article propose une analyse des dimensions intellectuelle et historienne de l’oeuvre de Gaétan Gervais, professeur d’histoire à l’Université Laurentienne de à , dans son rapport avec le processus de recomposition des cadres de référence identitaire en Ontario français depuis la fin des années jusqu’à nos jours. En revisitant certains segments de son itinéraire intellectuel et professionnel, l’étude fait apparaître l’historien comme l’une des principales figures énonciatrices d’une représentation identitaire axée sur une continuité référentielle avec le Canada français, porteuse d’une ambition autonomiste. Suivant l’examen de son positionnement épistémologique, l’analyse présente, en dernière instance, quelques pistes de réflexion autour des enjeux liés à la pratique de l’histoire dans les milieux minoritaires.
