May 23rd, A great man died today.
A great man with a huge heart - for his country. His gentle wisdom and authority made him one of the most respected men in Zimbabwe - respected by those who fought with him, and those who fought against him knowing ‘The Black Russian’ was a fine soldier. Respected - and loved - by those who worked with him and knew him personally.
Dumiso and I were ‘twins’ - born on the same day. We met again on the upper levels of what I had once known as the Earl Grey Building in Harare. To my relief a chuckling young girl rescued me from the hate lined faces of security police, their threatening AK’s pushing me back into the lift and shouting “you are not allowed to see the Minister …”
Down the important staircase leading only to the very upper echelons she ran, sparkling and squealing with delight “You must be Jill - the Minister is wanting to see you now.”

Following the death of Dumiso Dabengwa, Zimbabwe has lost a true hero. That he is a national hero requires no deliberation.
For none among the living have the legitimacy to make that pronouncement. It is a matter of fact.
He carried himself with quiet dignity and after a reluctant and ultimately fruitless dalliance with Zanu PF following the Unity Accord, Dabengwa let his conscience be his master and returned to the people, in whose hearts and minds heroes lie.
He walked with them until he drew his last breath, refusing the lure of the gravy train, a temptation that few men have the capacity and will to resist.
He could have chosen the comfort of the ruling party to curry favour with the establishment in his final years.
But ever the humble man, Dabengwa chose to remain with the people — an extraordinary man who chose the path of ordinariness because it was the right thing to do.

A fitting way to pay tribute to Zimbabwean liberation war hero Dumiso “DD” Dabengwa, who has died aged 79, is to depict a snapshot history of the late s and the s that shows the stresses of his job during and just after Zimbabwe’s war of liberation.
As the head of intelligence for Zimbabwe African People’s Revolutionary Army, the armed wing of Zimbabwe African People’s Union (Zapu), he faced two enemies in the late seventies: the Rhodesian forces and those of Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwean African National Union (Zanu), the nationalist party that split off from Zapu in and would eventually lead Zimbabwe. In the s South Africa and the United Kingdom joined those antagonists.
Only psychologists could discern how Dabengwa maintained his legendary composure. He kept his head while everyone was losing theirs: a necessary trait for an intelligence supremo.
