Charles Drew ()
Charles Richard Drew was a medical researcher, surgeon, and the first African American to be appointed as a medical examiner for the American Board of Surgery. His research and work led to the development of processing and storing plasma in blood banks.
Drew was born on June 3, , in Washington, DC. His mother, Nora Rosella Burrell Drew, was the daughter of a European sea captain, and was trained as a schoolteacher. His father, Richard Drew, was a light skinned African American carpet-layer, as well as the secretary and only non-white member of the Carpet, Linoleum, and Soft-Tile Layers Union in the District of Columbia.
Raised in an upper-middle class neighborhood, Drew first attended Stevens Elementary, then Dunbar High School. Drew was an excellent student and athlete, exceeding in four sports, which earned him the James E. Walker Medal, and an athletic scholarship to Amherst College in Massachusetts once he graduated from Dunbar in He continued to excel in athletics, but the death of his sister and an injury in his senior year changed his focus towards medicine.

The American Red Cross blood program in place todayis a direct result of the work of medical pioneer Dr. Charles Drew. Dr. Drew was instrumental in developing blood plasma processing, storage and transfusion therapy. His groundbreaking work in the large-scale production of human plasma was eventually used by the U.S. Army and the American Red Cross as the basis for blood banks.

As a child Charles Drew attended Meads Mill Elementary School, working as a paperboy selling copies of the Washington Times-Herald after school. In , he enrolled at Dunbar High School, a racially segregated high school with a reputation for being one of the strongest academic Black public schools in the country. Charles Richard Drew was born June 3, , in Washington, D.C. He was the oldest child in his family, and from a young age, he was an outstanding athlete. In elementary school, he won many swimming medals, and in his later childhood, he began playing basketball, football, track and field, and other sports. He earned a sports scholarship to Amherst College, where he focused on football and track. Here, he was one of only 13 Black students. Drew had a dream of one day attending medical school, but after graduating with his bachelor's degree, he didn't have enough money.
After school, Drew worked as a coach and biology professor at Morgan College, which is now known as Morgan State University. After working, and earning a living, he decided to attend McGill University, a college in Montreal, Canada. There, he won a prize in neuroanatomy and was a part of a medical honor's program. Drew graduated from McGill in , earning his MD and Master of Surgery Degree. He was second in his class of students.
