In Rich married Sarah DeArmon Pea (), and the couple settled near Far West, Missouri, until driven to Nauvoo, Illinois, in Rich served as a counselor in the Nauvoo Stake, sat on the Nauvoo City Council, and was one of the original members of the Council of Fifty. After the death of Joseph Smith, Jr., in , Rich rose to the rank of major general in the Nauvoo Legion.
As a church leader, Rich followed the doctrine of plural marriage, taking three additional wives in Eliza Ann Graves (), Mary Ann Phelps (), and Sarah Jane Peck (). Before leaving Nauvoo in , he married Emeline Grover (); and in at Winter Quarters he took Harriet Sargent

Apostle Charles C. Rich was leading a group of missionaries across the desert to California—some to explore the area for settlement and some assigned to dig gold and bring financial aid to the Church. A company of gold seekers led by Captain John Smith persuaded the missionaries under Brother Rich to take a shortcut that would supposedly save them days of travel.
After the group nearly perished for want of water, Brother Rich felt impressed that he must take the Mormon elders and turn back to the established route, even though they had wasted a good deal of time trying to cut across the Sierras. On 11 November , Elder George Q. Cannon, a member of the party, recorded in his journal: “Bro. Rich said this evening that he was not going to be led round in this manner any longer. In Charles, a schoolteacher, farmer, and cooper, was viewed as an “honest young man but made no pretensions to religion.”[1] It was news of the Book of Mormon that awakened his curiosity to religious matters. Charles penned of studying the Book of Mormon and asking the Lord in prayer to know if the book and the Restoration message were true. He wrote, “The spirit would then whisper, you have not been baptized, you have not obeyed the Gospel, but when I had complied with the law, then I obtained a perfect knowledge of the truth, and could then bear a testimony of it to all the world.”[2]
In the spring of , Charles was baptized in Tazewell County, Illinois, by George M. Hinkle and ordained an elder by Zebedee Coltrin. Two years later, he volunteered to march with Zion’s Camp to Missouri. When camp members were dismissed to return to their homes, Charles journeyed on to Kirtland.
