These poems are not bound by language, they leap from one to the other, indeed one realm to the other; not bound my myth, not bound by life, not bound by earth. Where they land, a world
all their own. You ever read your biography in a foreign language filled with foreign characters? At the end you come out with an intimate understanding of who you are, your place in
the places you call home. Don&#;t let the zombies and moon-eating frogs fool you, these poems will tell you about yourself, whether you be from Laos, Vietnam, Guinea or Soma

Author's Statement

In a lifetime of writing I see there is still so much left to say. I consider this fellowship not only a personal joy but a true community milestone. I gladly continue my work presenting the dreams of my fellow refugees and our contributions to the great American tapestry.

I have been fortunate in my life to meet so many whose lives were changed at the deepest level by my work. So I continue. I know how much difference even a single word, a single sentence can make in a life. My eye gratefully appraises a dizzying world of the expressed seeking to convey the inexpressible. And occasionally, a great poem comes out of all this. That's a poet's path. That is my path.

There are stories and poems I can't wait to share with you all in celebration of our journey together. Change is possible only through the free expression of the many voices of a diverse people. It is one of the true joys of life.

I thank the National Endowment for the Arts for their support of my writing and their commitment to encouraging dialogues celebrating the creative spirit. I hope scientists and politicians, preachers and the wise, our paupers and teachers, students and families can each

From that day forward, his literary talents were beyond compare. When he grew old, the god appeared again as a dream and retrieved the brush. Jiang Yan’s writing was never as brilliant again.

Given a thousand nights,

Maybe one day,
A page will be found,
A song will be heard,
A stroke will be drawn

Youa tells me a story over the hot hibachi:
How she went to Laos
To see her lucky sisters

We turn our dishes to
Heaven, but

What manner of dog will come running

Speak to me of padaek
And some poor ba ferments, pungent, chunky and spicy.
Alas, so unlikely to catch on like sriracha or sushi,
At least in this century.

From the moment I met her
She's been wiggling,
Squirming,

It took me by surprise that Hitler was a vegetarian.
Rudolf Hess, too.
I remember reading about them as a boy.
I remember the outrage when someone asked us to forgive them

Since the 6th century B.C.,
The Buddha has said
The right perspective,
The right motive,

Sometimes, I want to tell
