Nuvolari Through the eyes of his Friends
Few would argue with the notion that Tazio Nuvolari was one of the five greatest racing drivers of all time; some would even say the greatest. But as the years pass, the number of people who saw him race diminishes, so how can we really know? It is easy to parrot the biographies, of course, but most of them usually recite blow-by-blow race reports— some flawed at the time of writing up to 70 years ago, some blurred by being re-told time and time again—and his results.
And what results! Nuvolari competed in car races, won 57 of them including 16 Grands Prix, two Mille Miglias, two Targa Florios, two Tourist Trophies, the Vanderbilt Cup, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and put up 50 fastest laps. It was the same with motorcycles. Tazio ran in bike races, won 39, scored 39 class wins and set 40 fastest laps. Before the Second World War, he was known as the fastest man on earth.
But why was he so successful? What was his secret? Was his driving technique really so different? What was he like as a person? Was he a womaniser? And what did his wife think of him?
To find out, Vintage Racecar boarded its very own time machine and roared back a

Biography of Tazio Nuvolari
Tazio Nuvolari, also known as the "Flying Mantuan", was an Italian auto and motorcycle racer. He was born in Castel d'Aria, Mantua, Lombardy, and was the fourth son of Arturo Nuvolari, a renowned cyclist.
At the age of 23, Tazio obtained a motorcycle racing license, but he was immediately drafted into the Italian army as a driver. However, his racing career officially began on June 20, , when he participated in his first race in Cremona. Just nine months later, on March 20, , he won his first race in Verona.
Tazio became a professional racer and competed alongside Enzo Ferrari (who was not yet the founder of the famous team at that time). He quickly gained popularity in Italy, earning titles such as "Il campionissimo delle due ruote" (the champion of two wheels) from his fans. Tazio Nuvolari’s Story
Usually, in the province of Mantua, there’s nothing but cold and fog in November. Yet, in , on the 16th day of the month, an important birth occurred. Arturo Nuvolari was a farmer and a cyclist with several victories under his belt, although not as many as his brother, Giuseppe, who was an Italian champion. Arturo’s wife, Elisa Zorzi, gave birth to their fourth son: Tazio Nuvolari. Obviously, no one in the family yet knew that a champion had been born.
Little Tazio inherited a passion for sports. The spark ignited in , when he saw a car race for the first time on the circuit in Brescia. Just a few months after that experience, Giuseppe taught him to ride a motorcycle. The next step towards four wheels is short. He was only 13 when he drove a car for the first time, his father’s. He had “stolen” it at night to take a moonlight ride. “I hadn’t gone over 30 km/h,” he would later tell. Both the car and little Tazio had returned home all in one piece.
During World War I, Nuvolari was called to drive ambulances and service cars. His first accident occurred at this time. “Forget about it. Cars aren’t your thing,” had said the officer who was in the car with hi
