A Week in the Life of Opera Star Diana Damrau

German soprano Diana Damrau is known for her vivid and luminous portrayals of many opera roles, including Violetta in La Traviata, the Countess and Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, and the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte. Fresh off a triumphant run as Leila in Bizet's little-heard masterpiece Les Pêcheurs de Perles at the Metropolitan Opera (the production was mounted for her), she headed to the Palm Beach Opera gala where she and pianist Craig Rutenberg gave a recital at the Mar-a-Lago Club for rapt audience members. Daniel Biaggi, General Director of the Palm Beach Opera, explains what makes Diana so extraordinary: "She is one of the world's leading sopranos and one of the most exquisite singers. She simply has one of the most beautiful voices, and combines technical ease with an enormous refinement of interpretation. Her nuanced and spirited performances in a wide variety of repertoire are exactly what we were looking for." Quiet moments are rare for this mother of two, whose performance schedule also happens to be planned for the next five years.

Q: What is it like for you on performance days?

A:

Diana Damrau

Soprano Diana Damrau has been performing on the world’s leading opera and concert stages for two decades. Her vast repertoire spans both lyric soprano and coloratura roles including the title roles in Lucia di Lammermoor (La Scala, Bavarian State Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House), Manon (Vienna State Opera, Metropolitan Opera) and La traviata (La Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Opéra national de Paris and Bavarian State Opera) as well as Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute (Metropolitan Opera, Salzburg Festival, Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera House).

Invested as Kammersängerin of the Bavarian State Opera () and holder of the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art (), Diana Damrau has forged close links with the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich where she has been seen in new productions of Lucia di Lammermoor, Les contes d’Hoffmann (the four heroines), Ariadne on Naxos (Zerbinetta), The Silent Woman (Aminta), The Magic Flute (Queen of the Night) and Rigoletto (Gilda). Other high profile appearances have included La traviata (Sophie) and The Abduction from the Seraglio (Constanze).

The Metropolitan Opera

A Delightful Morning

Diana Damrau and Joseph Calleja sing live from Caserta in Italy as part of Met Stars Live in Concert, experienced by MARIA NOCKIN

On Saturday 24 October , The Metropolitan Opera resumed its presentation of online concert performances staged in Europe. Hostess Christine Goerke was not available at this time because she is in quarantine after returning from Detroit where she performed Brünnhilde in the Michigan Opera Theatre Scenes from Wagner's Götterdämerung. Effervescent Angel Blue, who was to have sung Mimi in the San Diego Opera drive-in La bohème, replaced Goerke and lyrically talented Ana Maria Martinez replaced Blue in San Diego. Sometimes opera is like a relay race.

Soprano Diana Damrau and tenor Joseph Calleja, both long time Met Opera stars, performed a program of arias and duets live online from the Cappella Palatina of the Royal Palace of Caserta, less than an hour's drive north of Naples. Since Act I of Puccini's Tosca is set in a church, this huge chapel with its 'live' sound provided a perfect setting for the 'Mario! Mario!' duet. Calleja strode across the marble church floor with a commanding presence.
