An early job for government was as secretary and charge d’affaires at the Ethiopian legation in Paris, where he stayed between and while his country was under Italian occupation, acting as the Emperor’s representative. After the liberation in , he joined the Foreign Office, rising to be Vice-Minister and Foreign Minister on July 3, There he was active in the negotiations with Italy lasting seven years from to over Eritrea, which was finally reunited with Ethiopia. Dr. Aklilu Habte, an Ethiopian national, brings to his book, History of the Haile Selassie I University, authority realized through more than 35 years of relevant academic, managerial, national and international civil service experiences, consultancies, and Diaspora community volunteerism. Born in Addis Ababa in , he himself was educated at University College of Addis Ababa—that would later become Haile Selassie I University—where he earned a Bachelor’s degree with distinction in After earning a Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba, Canada, a Master of Education and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University, he returned to Haile Sellassie I University. There, from to , he served successively as Lecturer in Education, Head of the Education Department, Dean of the Faculties of Arts and of Education, and Associate Academic Vice President. Lastly, Dr. Habte was President of the University from to During this presidency, he received an Honorary D.H.I. from Ohio State University. Aklilu Habte-Wold (Amharic: አክሊሉ ሀብተ ወልድ; 12 March – 23 November ) was an Ethiopian politician under Emperor Haile Selassie. He was foreign minister of Ethiopia from to and 3rd Prime Minister from until shortly before his death.
Aklilu Habte-Wold was the son of a rural Ethiopian Orthodox priest from the Bulga district of Shewa province. He and his brothers, Makonnen Habte-Wold and Akalework Habte-Wold benefited from the patronage of Emperor Haile Selassie, who had them educated. Aklilu Habte-Wold attended the French lycee in Alexandria, then afterwards studied in France.
Upon returning to Ethiopia, Aklilu became the protégé of the powerful Tsehafi Taezaz ("Minister of the Pen") Wolde Giyorgis Wolde Yohannes, another man of humble birth, who had become a powerful figure in Ethiopian government, and a close advisor to the Emperor, with his appointment as Tsehafi Taezaz. When another distinguished TMS graduate, Bisrat Aklilu, suggested several weeks ago that I contact Dr. Aklilu, whom I hadn’t met, about recording his reflections and reminiscences, I was, frankly, skeptical that he would be willing to spend the time. I was aware that he was in the midst of an ambitious writing project – a history of the development of higher education in Ethiopia – and couldn’t imagine he would welcome the distraction. But, thank heaven, Bisrat was insistent, so I telephoned Dr. Aklilu, who, to my delighted surprise, readily agreed to do the recording. Before providing you with an overview of Dr. Aklilu’s illustrious career, I want to thank his son, Ameha Aklilu, who took time from his tremendously demanding schedule as a senior IBM executive to assemble a treasure trove of photographs that you’ll see as you listen to the podcast.
